In this episode Maxwell Cooper, M.D. interviews John Shufeldt, MD, JD, MBA, an emergency medicine physician, serial HealthTech entrepreneur, author, and venture capitalist. Dr. Shufeldt tells the listeners about his early entrepreneurial journey starting multiple businesses and what he learned from those experiences. He goes on to discuss starting NextCare Urgent Care, an urgent care company with over 100 clinics in multiple states that was eventually acquired. Dr. Shufeldt also discusses his telemedicine company, MeMD, which was acquired recently by WalMart. Dr. Shufeldt is now a venture capitalist as a managing director at Xcellerant Ventures, a firm focusing on early stage healthtech and medtech startups. Dr. Shufeldt provides advice for choosing your co-founders, when to seek outside funding, proper timing and execution for scaling a business, and how to plan for an acquisition. Lastly, Dr. Shufeldt discusses his book and podcast Entrepreneur Rx and his flying experience as a longtime pilot.

In this episode Maxwell Cooper, M.D. interviews Amit Mehta, M.D., an interventional radiologist, serial medtech entrepreneur, and venture capitalist. Dr. Mehta tells the the listeners about how he became interested in medical innovation as an interventional radiology resident at Massachusetts General Hospital and went on to start Intrinsic Imaging, a company that provides diagnostic imaging services for clinical trials investigating pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and clinical artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms. Intrinsic Imaging exited in 2021. Dr. Mehta discusses how became initially interested in investing in startups and started one of his current roles as General Partner at Builders VC, a venture capital firm based in San Francisco investing in a variety of spaces. Dr. Mehta discusses how he has invented multiple medical devices and all that is involved in getting an early stage medical device company off the ground. Dr. Mehta provides the listeners with advice for starting and building a medtech company from both his perspective as a founder and that of an investor. Dr. Mehta also provides advice for physician entrepreneurs and how they can use their clinical experience to advise and/or start a medtech company.

In this episode Maxwell Cooper, M.D. interviews Danny Goel, M.D., an orthopaedic surgeon and Co-Founder and CEO of Precision OS, a virtual reality surgical simulation and training platform. Dr. Goel discusses how Precision OS is a platform used by surgeons and residents to learn new procedures, refine surgical skills, and demo new medical devices. Precision OS has recently released the first surgical training virtual reality curriculum to allow surgical simulation with their platform to be integrated in to residency programs to help residents practice and refine surgical skills. Precision OS has also enabled medical device companies to train surgeons and sales staff on how to use their portfolio of medical devices. Dr. Goel also discusses the importance of building a great team, especially with co-founders that compliment your skill sets. Lastly, Dr. Goel discusses how he balances his orthopaedic surgical practice with running Precision OS and how they enhance each other.

Dr. Wolf tells the listeners about his previous career as a trauma surgeon in the Israeli equivalent of US Navy Seal Team 6 and how his career transitioned toward medical innovation and entrepreneurship. Dr. Wolf discusses how when he learned about the disparities in surgical outcomes and care a single city of the US, he was inspired to start Theator to help improve surgical outcomes. Dr. Wolf partnered with Co-Founders experienced in tech development and created the Theator platform, which analyzes surgical video footage using AI and computer vision to provide insights into key decision points, eventful steps, and important milestones during the procedure. Theator has already been implemented across several hospital systems, including the Mayo Clinic, with the intent of equalizing outcomes, identifying areas of improvement, and improving education for surgical residents and practicing surgeons looking to expand their skillset. Lastly, Dr. Wolf discusses the importance of finding Co-Founders and team members that compliment your skill and how to provide the right balance of oversight and freedom for team members to do their best work.

Dr. Lebovic tells the listeners about her journey as a surgeon that became heavily involved in inventing and commercializing medical devices mainly focused on improving oncologic care and reconstructive surgery for women with breast cancer. Dr. Lebovic discusses how she has applied her experience with her prior companies toward her current device, NasoClenz, a medical device with patent cleaning solution for cleaning the nose. Dr. Lebovic explains using the Academic Mindset for developing a medical device and how her company performed clinical studies demonstrating the efficacy of NasoClenz for reducing infection for surgical patients. Dr. Lebovic also discusses how her team has developed NasoClenz to be an over the counter consumer product that is available on Amazon and in stores.
